Simple Snacks Kids Love
Looking for some tasty and easy ways to offer a variety of nutritious snacks to the after-school crowd? Here are a bunch that kids will love!
Milk products
Chocolate milk
On its own or ‘on the rocks’, chocolate milk is a favourite with kids. It’s a great way for kids to refuel after school and get important nutrients like protein, calcium, vitamin D, vitamin A, magnesium, zinc and others! And why not include it in the lunch box? Be sure to drop in an ice pack so the milk stays nice and cold, or choose UHT milk, which keeps at room temperature.
Choose your own smoothie adventure
For an added taste adventure and a nutrient packed snack, combine milk or flavoured milk (chocolate, strawberry, vanilla, banana, etc.), your favourite fruit and some ice cubes in a blender. Hit the blend button and enjoy!
Frozen snack in a bag
This is a fun way for young kids to make their own tasty snack using chocolate milk! Serve it with fresh fruit or a thin wafer. Follow these simple steps for making your own frozen snack:
- Fill a large resealable bag half full of ice. Add 1/2 cup of salt. Seal and shake to mix.
- Put 1/2 cup of chocolate milk into a small sandwich bag and seal.
- Place the milk bag inside the ice bag, and seal again carefully.
- Shake the bag for 5 minutes wearing oven mitts—the mixture will turn into ice cream.
- Scoop into serving cups.

Fun pudding for dessert
Kids love pudding. While store-bought pudding might seem like an easy choice, ready-made and instant varieties are usually quite high in sugar and fat. For a quick homemade pudding made with nutritious chocolate milk, try our Chocolate Milk Jiggle Pudding recipe. It’s delicious sprinkled with breakfast cereal.
Vegetables and fruit
If you want your children to eat more vegetables and fruit, be sure to always have plenty on hand and... in view! Here are two fun, new ways to serve fruits and veggies.
Fruit kabobs
Wash and cut up fresh fruit into chunks, and slide onto skewers. Serve with vanilla or fruit yogurt for dipping, or roll the fruit kabobs in yogurt and then roll in chopped nuts or coconut. For younger children, it’s safer to remove fruit chunks from the skewer before serving.
Veggie bowl
Cut a red or green pepper in half (across the middle) and remove the seeds. Set one half aside to be used as a bowl. Cut the other half of the pepper, some celery and carrots into sticks. Put a small quantity of homemade veggie dip into the bottom of the pepper bowl. Put veggie sticks into bowl and serve. When you’re finished eating the sticks, enjoy the bowl!
Any other snack ideas?
Hummus dip
Some children do not care for the texture of legumes. That need not be an obstacle. By presenting foods in different ways, children often learn to appreciate a variety of foods. Try this delicious hummus dip that you can serve with whole-wheat crackers and veggie sticks!
A classic
Spread a little peanut butter on a banana for a snack that often gets everyone's vote—why not switch it up by trying almond or hazelnut butter?
