Milk and Calves

No, cow's milk is not just good for calves. Humans of all ages can also benefit from its high nutrient value.

Is drinking the milk of another species unnatural? No, say scientists. Like other omnivores, humans eat a variety of plant and animal foods. However, we are also able to use our intelligence to use foods other species cannot. No other species harvests their food, cooks their meals, or bakes their own bread. We use milk and milk products because they are nutrient-dense foods, taste good, and simply because we can.

It is true that each species has its own unique milk that remains the best food for its young. Even so, for millennia, adult humans have consumed milk from various domestic animals. While cow’s milk is the most common, various cultures around the world consume the milk of other animals including, sheep, goats, camels, water buffalos, mares, llamas, reindeers, and yaks, among others.

In spite of this, some people still believe that cow's milk is only good for calves. This is unfortunate, since they are unnecessarily missing out on a readily available and versatile food that is an important source of calcium, vitamin D, protein, and other essential nutrients.
