Quebec
La belle province could be nicknamed "cheese heaven ", as over three-quarters of all the country’s cheeses are produced here, as well as 60% of all fine cheeses.
Quebec is home to over one hundred cheese makers, more than any other province. Although over half of all Cheddars in the country are produced here, Quebec is best known for its specialty cheeses. In fact, despite a cheese making tradition that goes back to the 16th century, the fine cheese sector really started to soar in the late 1980s.
An increasing number of artisan cheese makers have strived to create unique products with aromas and flavours reminiscent of the land. It’s no surprise that Quebec boasts one of the top per capita cheese consumption volumes in the country, with 8 kg per year per person. It also comes in second place in terms of cheese sales. Quebec cheese makers have also dominated the Canadian Cheese Grand Prix honour roll since its beginnings. Each of the competition’s six Grand Champions was created in the province. What a fantastic world of cheeses to discover!
