Ontario
The most populated province in Canada is also the top cheese seller in the country.
Although per capita consumption is a bit more modest than in other provinces, with approximately 6 kg per year, Ontario is the country’s second biggest cheese producer, with approximately 30% of the total national production.
Over 40 cheese makers call the province their home and produce a large variety of wonderful cheeses, some of which have won prestigious national and international awards. In fact, Ontario producers have traditionally won big in the fresh cheese and pasta filata cheese categories at the Canadian Cheese Grand Prix, with the most number of awards over the years.
Cheese lovers will also be glad to know that Ontario’s fine cheese sector is once again booming. Though many farmhouse cheeses were produced here in the 19th century, industrialisation eventually favoured production on a bigger scale. Artisan cheese makers are making a comeback though and they are dedicated to creating outstanding, one-of-a-kind products. Attention all foodies!
