Alberta
Nicknamed the "heart of the Canadian Rockies", Alberta is home to nine cheese makers who produce over a hundred varieties of Canadian cheeses that are widely available in supermarkets and cheese shops in and out of the province.
Fourth province in terms of cheese sales, Alberta has earned a reputation for its delicious flavoured firm cheeses.
In fact, a cheese maker located in Sylvan Lake was thrice awarded category champion at the Canadian Cheese Grand Prix (2006 and 2009), thanks to his uniquely flavoured Goudas and to a Gruyere. In addition, all of this artisan’s cheeses are made with the farm’s own cows’ milk.
Albertans love their cheese, with a yearly per capita consumption of nearly 8 kg, which is among the highest in the country. They are particularly fond of Cheddar and fresh cheese, as well as Mozzarella, Feta, Havarti and Swiss.
