Team Sports of Sorts

These simple activities and games are designed to have simple fun, build trust and grow your cooperation skills as a family.

Guided fetch

Divide group into pairs. One person in each pair is blindfolded and the partner must direct him to retrieve an object somewhere in the house (or yard, or park) using verbal communication only. If the item they seek is food, having them try to deal with the plastic wrap while blindfolded can be quite challenging (not to mention hilarious!).

Who’s got the shoe?

All family members sit in a row except for one facing them. That person closes his eyes while the others pass a sneaker between them behind their backs. When the person says, “Stop!” the passing stops immediately. By scrutinizing faces, the person must guess who has the sneaker. If the guess is right, the person changes places with the sneaker holder. A wrong guess and the person has to endure another pass. Remember, the eyes speak volumes!

Frozen face

Get an empty picture frame. Each player must hold their face motionless for 60 seconds while the rest of the family does their best to get them to laugh. Sixty seconds will never have seemed to last so long!

So, why not get the family to decide which evening will be the weekly kids cook night; an evening where the mini-chefs call the shots, from the entrée to the candles and music. Invitations, place cards, formal wear, costumes, accents, décor, movies, ancient Rome – you can basically adapt and modify the concept indefinitely. Family dinners as a role-playing game?
